Clinical Trainings

• Two introductory programs: Intensive and Part-time Intensive
• Lecture, case studies and clinical experience
• Physicians, nurse practitioners, nurse midwives, physician assistants, nurse clinicians
• STD, Family Planning, and other Primary Care clinics in both public and private settings, Trauma Centers, Acute Care clinics
• 50% of class time clinical and laboratory experience
• Registration limited to 10 full-time participants Intensive

Objectives
• Identify the components of a good STD physical assessment/examination for female patients
• Identify the components of a good STD physical assessment/examination for male patients
• Perform a proper STD physical assessment/examination for female patients in the clinic setting under the supervision of a licensed clinician/preceptor
• Perform a proper STD physical assessment/examination for male patients in the clinic setting under the supervision of a licensed clinician/preceptor
• Describe the procedure for obtaining specimens from female patients
• Describe the procedure for obtaining specimens from male patients
• Identify the sites from which specimens should be obtained
• Demonstrate proper technique when obtaining specimens from female patients

• Demonstrate basic skill in use of the Brightfield microscope
• Identify the conditions most commonly seen in the STD Clinic

Patient Examination Techniques

• One day introductory course
• Lecture and clinical experience

• 70% of class time clinical experience
• Emphasis on skills for STD reproductive exams
• Registration is limited to 10 participants

Objectives
• Perform an STI physical assessment/examination for female patients
• Perform an STI physical assessment/examination for male patients
• List the equipment necessary to perform a routine STI physical assessment examination
• Identify the sites from which specimens should be obtained
• Identify why specimens should be obtained
• List the laboratory tests which are recommended for screening all patients at-risk for STIs
• Describe one skill for effective patient/provider communication to get a complete sexual history
• Describe one skill for effective patient/provider communication to assess risk for STIs and other reproductive health problems

Basic STIs for Healthcare Professionals

• Three day introductory course
• Lecture and class participation
• All health care providers
• All primary care clinics, substance abuse centers, adolescent centers, needle exchange and other prevention outreach programs
• 50% of class time class participation
• Emphasis on sexual risk-taking behaviors
• Registration is limited to 15 participants

Objectives
• Describe the organs of the reproductive anatomy affected by STI
• Identify the agents which cause the most STIs
• Define the differences between bacterial and viral STIs
• List two important points to cover when counseling about birth control and STI prevention
• Recognize the differences between men/women, which put women at greater risk for long-term sequelae of STI
• Describe some methods which protect the patient's privacy while complying with State reporting regulations
• Discuss behaviors, which put individuals at risk for STIs
• Describe issues that impact community outreach activities

Laboratory Methods

• Two programs
• One-day skill building course
• Lecture and practicum
• Laboratory technicians, physicians, nurse midwives, nurse clinicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants; disease intervention specialists, other clinical personnel
• STD, Family Planning, other Primary Care clinics employing a Point of Service Support Laboratory
• Emphasis on specimen collection, preparation and identification
• Registration limited to 10 participants

Brightfield Microscopy
• 90% of class time laboratory experience

Darkfield Mircroscopy
• 80% of class time laboratory experience

Brightfield Objectives
• Identify the major components of the Brightfield microscope
• Demonstrate proper techniques in the care and use of the Brightfield microscope
• Describe the recommended laboratory procedures for the collection of genital specimens
• Demonstrate proper procedures for specimen preparation
• Identify trichomonads in saline solution
• Identify clue cells in saline solution
• Identify candida in KOH solution

Darkfield Objectives
• Demonstrate proper techniques in the care of the microscope
• Demonstrate the proper techniques in using the Darkfield microscope
• Discuss methods for specimen collection
• Identify T. pallidum
• Identify borrelia and other spirochetal organisms

Faculty

Primary faculty is from Johns Hopkins University Medical Institutions, the Baltimore City Health Department, and the Maryland State Laboratory. Additional faculty are recruited from the University of Maryland, the MCP Hahnemann University School of Medicine, the Philadelphia Department of Health, the Delaware Division of Public Health, other region-wide university systems, and private training consultants.

Training Courses

In some cases the PTC will design specialized training programs, which meet emerging needs. Additionally, the National PTC Network is producing nationwide teleconferences. These teleconferences will address topics in STD medical management, prevention, diagnostics and treatment. The PTCs also arrange clinical experience in selected clinic sites for students in clinical training.

The Division of Professional Development and Evaluation of the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) has designated specific educational activities for Category 1 credit toward the AMA Physician's Recognition Award. Contact the PTC for information regarding classes and the number of hours. Each physician should claim only those hours that he/she actually spent in the educational activity.

The CDC is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to sponsor continuing medical education for physicians.
